I am re-reading Toni Morrison’s "Beloved." Why I like it for psychotherapy clients is that this masterpiece of African American literature discusses the legacy of slavery on the American psyche. This novel also reviews the way in which trauma manifests in that we “forget” horrible events in our lives. But they always resurface – Freud’s notion of the “return of the repressed.” Beloved is the murdered infant who returns as a beautiful woman seducing the main character, Sethe. The work is sensuous, gorgeously written. I am also "listening" to it as as an audio book, with Morrison herself reading, and it "sounds" here more like a play.
